Louisiana Fortify Homes Program: Grant Registration Opens September 18

If you’re a homeowner in Louisiana’s Coastal Zone, now is the time to prepare for the next round of Louisiana Fortify Homes Program (LFHP) grants. Starting Wednesday, September 18, at 8 a.m., the registration for these valuable grants will be open, with a closing deadline at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 20. Unlike previous rounds, which operated on a first-come, first-served basis, this round will use a lottery system to ensure a fairer distribution of funds.

Key Details About the Grant Registration:

  • Lottery Registration Period: September 18, 8 a.m. to September 20, 5 p.m.
  • Eligibility: Homeowners in Louisiana’s Coastal Zone, including parishes such as Ascension, Calcasieu, Jefferson, Orleans, and others.
  • Selection Process: 300 participants will be chosen randomly through the lottery system. Additionally, 200 will be placed on a waitlist.
  • Notification: Selected participants will be notified via email.

Homeowners who have previously applied but were not selected must re-register for this round. If selected, you will be eligible for a grant of up to $10,000 to upgrade your roof to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s FORTIFIED Roof Standard, which is designed to strengthen homes against severe weather conditions.

What You Need to Know Before Registering:

Before you rush to apply, ensure you meet the eligibility requirements. These include having a homestead exemption on your property, proof of active residential insurance with wind coverage, and in some cases, flood insurance if you live in a FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Area. Homes must also be in good repair as determined by a FORTIFIED Evaluator.

Future Rounds and Considerations:

The LFHP is actively considering expanding future grant rounds statewide and potentially prioritizing homeowners with low-to-moderate incomes. More details will be provided later this year, so keep an eye out for updates if you don’t qualify or are not selected in this round.

Why This Matters:

With over 1,300 FORTIFIED roof grants issued since the program’s inception, LFHP is not only helping homeowners but also making Louisiana a more attractive place for insurers. According to Commissioner Tim Temple, the shift to a lottery system is intended to create a fairer experience for everyone interested in applying.

For those ready to take advantage of this opportunity, visit the LFHP website at www.ldi.la.gov/fortifyhomes to create or update your profile and get more information on eligibility. This simple step could make a significant difference in the resilience of your home against future storms.
